Genesee Valley Greenway

Awesome Trail, do not attempt unprepared.

February, 2026 by ajsavitsky

I love this trail. There's a trailhead right down the street from where I go to school up in Rochester, and it makes for a great endurance ride on a late summer or early fall day. Typically, I'll pick up the trail head and ride south down to Wadsworth Junction, where I can then pick up the Lehigh Valley trail. Generally speaking I have nothing bad to say about this trail. It's pretty well maintained, has some beautiful scenery, and a lot of cool history scattered throughout. However, a word of caution: It was the Sunday before Columbus day, I had some time to kill, and I decided I wanted to take the trail down to the Junction point in Piffard (Not the same as Pittsford). At this point in time, I hadn't gone anywhere past Wadsworth junction yet, so I was pretty much riding blind. As I got further south past Wadsworth, the terrain got significantly more sketchy. Trenches, muddy conditions, and A LOT of hedge apples. Not to mention the sheer amount of leaves that had fallen making it hard to plot a line ahead. Against all odds, I made it to my destination, and back in one piece, having only wiped out once. The moral of this story is, while the trail is awesome, do not attempt with out proper preparation. If you're like me, and you like to ride a gravel setup for versatility, be warned that standard gravel tires are probably not enough for the southern part of this trail specifically, and you might want to swap them for something more grippy (e.g. a cx tire) if you plan on going further. Great trail! Ride with caution.

Rode out 11 miles from Emporium toward St. Mary's (~22 miles RT). Beautiful scenery once you get out town. Several interpretive signs explaining the environment and history of the area. The trail is surface is mostly packed crush stone and is well maintained. Would definitely do this one again.

Rough.. big gravel ..but beautiful. So much wildlife. Beaver dams. A bear jumped on the trail in front of me about 50 yards.. I just waited as he walked away from me.

Nice Trail- has some deep water holes

July, 2025 by carebare552

This trail goes through state game lands, is mostly shady and parallels an active railway. The active railway portion has some deep mudholes. It would be wise to start at Ridgeway as it is uphill to Brockway.

A shady path for a heat intensive day!

Started at Kane. The trail was unmaintained after mile 4.7. I then went to the Kinzua bridge state park and rode to 219. A nice trail

Mahoning Shadow Trail

Mahoning Shadow is a beautiful ride

We stayed in Punxsutawney and could access the trail from our B and B. We rode east to Winslow, an uphill grade but doable on our e-bikes. Saw chipmunks, squirrels and a very long black snake crossing the trail. After a break for lunch in town we rode west to the Fordham trailhead. Several interesting sights along the way- the coke ovens, a couple Minions and another snake. The trail is wide 8-12’ with a cinder surface with no roots or potholes the whole length. Total 16 miles on a shady trail, sometimes along the Mahoning Creek. I bet it’s gorgeous in the Fall.

Mahoning Shadow Trail

No access from east end

Enjoyable trail. Coming from the east, we tried to find the trailhead off Winslow only to find that the road was closed. And google maps routed us to a two track just down the road that you couldn’t really get a car in. We eventually made our way to the west end at Villiere where there was parking at the trailhead. We had a trailer with five bikes. We rode as far as Punxsutawney and had dinner and beers at The Burrow.

Clarion Highlands

Hiked It

Parked at Kline Road, though no designated parking area, there was enough space off to the side of the road to park one vehicle without blocking the gate and lane. Headed West approx 2 miles and turned around. Trail is flat, sits high up almost as high as the next ridge over, and looking way down is Sandy Creek. Surface was dirt, cinder and gravel. Very wide in some areas, almost like a 2 lane back road. Doable on a gravel bike or mountain bike and possibly a hybrid with wider tires such as 700x45's.

We are doing the trail now. It is beautiful with the colors changing. This trail is so well kept, with the surprise statues, just a joy to us and the dog.
